Re-installing .Net Framework 2.0, 3.5 broke it!

Monday, December 17, 2007 5:27 PM

Who knew that installing 3.5 will bring me down to my knees. I can't do anything 2.0 anymore since I installed 3.5, it seems it installed SP1 for 2.0 and that broke everything that has to do with 2.0 and check out the icon, found out the icon was different after an hour of research trying to figure out what was wrong with my .NET applications.

Off course my first step was to re-install 2.0, however, I got the following message.

Therefore, I had no other choice but to remove 3.0 and 3.5. I couldn't uninstall 2.0 because I get the following message.

I've tried the Microsoft recommended methods, however, each one had some issue that preventing me from completing the remaining steps.

Cleanup Framework 2.0 by Aaron

Solution: Use Aaron's cleanup tool, then re-install 2.0/3.0 and don't install 3.5 again until a few months into the Year 08 :)

Update: it seems to be specific to me/my desktop and a few others. I actually found a few people on the web with the same issue, included a forum post that stated that a patch will be released. I also found out that the issue also interrupted my desktop RSS readers, RSSBandit and FeedExplorer to be specific. I get a few "cmd" windows running "regasm.exe" pop up every time I try to read my feeds. I've updated the post with a screenshot. One more thing, this is only on my desktop, laptop works fine with 3.0, so it may just be specific to my pc settings.

.NET 3.5 worked flawlessly here on the 20 or so machines of various configurations we're using including XP Pro, Vista Ultimate and Server 2003.

Being that .NET 3.5 does not include a new runtime and in fact uses the .NET 2.0 CLR such problems shouldn't happen.

Would be worth narrowing it down to find exactly what the cause is as it seems to be something very specific in your scenario or reports would be more widespread.
